Up Front Auto Repair — Standish, ME · March 2026 · 5 min read
Maine requires annual vehicle inspections. If you're in Standish, Gorham, Windham, Buxton, or the surrounding area, Up Front Auto Repair is a licensed Maine State Inspection station. Here's everything you need to know.
What Does a Maine State Inspection Include?
Maine's inspection program checks both safety and emissions (OBD II systems on 1996+ vehicles). Inspectors look at:
Safety items:
- Brakes — pads, rotors, calipers, brake fluid condition
- Tires — tread depth, sidewall condition, proper inflation
- Lights — headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards
- Steering — play in the wheel, power steering function
- Suspension — shocks, struts, ball joints, tie rods
- Windshield — cracks or chips in the driver's line of sight
- Horn — must work
- Wipers — must clear the windshield effectively
- Seat belts — must latch and retract
Emissions (1996 and newer):
- OBD II port scan — checks for active trouble codes
- Readiness monitors — must show complete (your car needs recent drive cycles)
How Much Does an Inspection Cost in Maine?
Maine sets the maximum fee at $12.50 for a basic inspection. Most shops, including us, charge at or near that rate. If your vehicle fails, you'll pay a re-inspection fee (typically $5–$10) after repairs are complete.
Common Reasons Maine Cars Fail Inspection
- Tires below 2/32" tread depth — worn tires fail. Don't let it sneak up on you.
- Brake pads below minimum thickness — we see this often on rear pads, which wear invisibly
- Check engine light on — active codes automatically fail emissions
- Readiness monitors not set — happens if your battery was recently disconnected or replaced
- Burned out bulbs — easy fix, still a failure
- Cracked windshield — must be outside the driver's critical vision area to pass
- Rust on brake lines — common in Maine. Can be a safety concern and inspection failure.
Pro tip: Don't disconnect your battery right before your inspection — it resets the readiness monitors and you'll automatically fail emissions.
What Happens If You Fail?
If we find something that fails, we'll tell you exactly what it is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's urgent or something you can schedule. We don't invent failures. If it passes, it passes. If it fails, you'll know exactly why.
After repairs, you come back and we do a partial re-inspection on the failed items only.
How to Prepare for Your Inspection
- Make sure all your lights work (walk around the car and check)
- Check your tire tread with a quarter — if you can see the top of Washington's head, you're close to failing
- If your check engine light is on, get it diagnosed before your inspection date
- Don't disconnect your battery right before — it resets the readiness monitors and you'll fail emissions
