For 47 years, Ruth's husband Harold handled everything with the cars. The oil changes. The inspections. The trips to the shop. When he passed away last spring after a short illness, Ruth was left navigating all of it alone for the first time in her adult life.
The sticker on the windshield was due. She'd been putting it off. She was 74 years old, living in Hollis, Maine, and genuinely afraid of walking into an auto shop by herself and getting taken advantage of. Her granddaughter helped her find Up Front Auto Repair in Standish.
She called ahead. Jon answered, walked her through what to expect, and told her to come by whenever was convenient. When she arrived, he did the inspection, showed her the one thing that needed attention — a worn wiper blade, nothing more — and charged her only for the inspection.
He walked her back to her car. Made sure she was comfortable. Reminded her to call anytime she had a question, even if she wasn't sure it was worth asking.
"He talked to me like I was a person," Ruth said. "Not like I was a problem. Harold would have liked him."
